Why A Pie Iron?

To make cinnamon rolls when you’re camping, you’ll need to use a pie iron.

A pie iron is one of the best tools you can have as a camper.

What is a pie iron?  Pie irons are cooking tools that consist of two domed cast iron plates, hinged together that will close securely with a latch.  They are attached to the end of a long pole and can be placed over or into a fire to cook with.

Sometimes called a camp cooker or a pudgy pie maker, pie irons are some of the easiest ways to get hot delicious camp food ready quickly.

We love our Coghlan’s Cast Iron Camp Cookers.  We actually have four of them and use them on every camping trip.

We use them for everything from toasted sandwiches to chocolate chip cookies

How To Make Pie Iron Cinnamon Rolls

Pie Iron Cinnamon rolls are incredibly easy to make.  You just need a few basic things, and you’re ready to go.

Supplies

You’ll need the following items on hand:

Pre-made cinnamon roll dough like Pillsbury or just your store brand (we’re fond of Aldi brand) work great for this!

While I guess you could bring something homemade out to your campsite, we’ve always found that these premade versions perfect for campfire cooking.

Parchment paper is KEY when you’re working with pie irons.  It helps prevent sticking and makes clean up SUPER easy, so you can just switch from sandwiches to desserts in a snap.

The Prep Work

The first essential step to cooking anything over a campfire is good prep work.

For pie iron cinnamon rolls, you just need to pre-cut your parchment to a size that will fit inside your pie iron.

This can be done at home, way before your camping trip, or you can do it on the fly.

Either way, you just want to make sure you won’t have any bits of paper hanging out side of the pie iron that could catch fire when you’re cooking.

You’ll need two pieces of parchment for every cinnamon roll you plan to make in your pie iron.

Place each cinnamon roll in between two pieces of parchment paper.

Then place one cinnamon roll into the pie iron and close the latch.

**Use extreme caution if the pie iron is already hot.  Children should not work with hot pie irons since it is extremely easy to burn yourself on one.

Cooking Your Pie Iron Cinnamon Roll

Cinnamon rolls can only be cooked one at a time in the pie irons, so if you’re looking to feed a crowd all at once, this may not be the dessert for you.

While cooking them one by one is a little time consuming, it’s super fun!

Pie irons over a campfire

Once you’ve got your pie iron all loaded up with your cinnamon roll, place it over your fire.

It will take around 15 minutes to cook through.

Since temperatures can vary wildly, it’s a good idea to open your pie iron and check on the cinnamon roll once in a while.

If it’s not done yet, you can just close it up again, and pop it back over the fire.

Again, use abundant caution when opening and closing a hot pie iron!!

Once your cinnamon roll is cooked, simply pop it out of the pie iron onto a place and top it with icing!

Y’all, these are SO good on a cool morning in front of a campfire.  They just taste better when they’re cooked outdoors.
